Overcoming Masturbation Addiction

Masturbation is a common behavior among men and women; however, masturbation is seldom understood. Many say to themselves, “what can be wrong with something that feels so good?” and even authors in the name of science suggest that masturbation is therapeutic & even necessary (Human Intimacy, p. 73).

Masturbation excites the sex drive and releases very powerful chemicals in the brain. Those neurochemicals can serve a committed male-female relationship in a profound way when they are released in the context of proper marital intimacy. In a giving relationship sex unites. Excited selfishly, our sex drives can burn us like a forest fire.

I have been caught in a compulsive cycle of sexual addiction ever since I was young and masturbation has always been a part of that cycle. I’ve always felt ashamed and embarrassed. I’ve been depressed and hopeless and NO, not because my religion tells me I should be. Being self-consumed I have often isolated myself from others and even grown distant because I desired more to be with myself than with others. I often saw others as objects and felt no desire to give to them.

In my prayers to my Father in Heaven have expressed my utter despair. I have felt like there was no way out of this self prison. After going to a handful of therapists and groups, religious and not, I still felt empty. Recently, I have found power in the gospel of Jesus Christ and at least in partial answer to my prayers I have found a group that believes FIRMLY in the power of deliverance from porn, masturbation and sexual addictions.

Some say, once an addict, always an addict. I now strongly disagree. There is hope! While recovery time is different for every person, there is freedom from the chains of addiction.
